James Simon didn’t begin his journey in theater with the intention of becoming a producer. His initial connection to the stage was through performance. As a child, he acted in shows at school and camp. That early exposure sparked his interest in theater, and even though he took other paths for a while, he eventually returned to what he loved.
He explored college and worked in radio before fully re-entering the world of theater. Over time, his focus shifted. While performance opened the door, his long-term impact would be made behind the scenes. Today, James L. Simon is a Broadway producer with two Tony Award nominations and credits across Manhattan and the UK.
A Career that Grew Backstage
James was born and raised in Bronxville, New York. He studied communications at Emerson College in Boston. After working in radio for a few years, he relocated to New York City in the early 1990s. At the time, he planned to pursue acting full-time.
Like many actors in the city, James took on multiple jobs to support himself. Eventually, the work he did on the side began to shape his main career. His first experience with a Broadway production came while working on a revival of Damn Yankees. That role helped him understand the scale and effort required to get a show on stage.
From there, James Simon, the Producer, took form. He developed a strong interest in the business and creative sides of theater production. Over time, he developed a skill in identifying projects with potential and connecting the right teams to bring them to life. This balance of creative insight and structured execution helped him make a place for himself in the theater world.

He received his first Tony Award nomination for Bells Are Ringing in the Best Revival of a Musical category. Most recently, Operation Mincemeat earned another nomination—this time for Best New Musical.
He has also had success Off-Broadway. James co-produced The Woman in Black, which the Off-Broadway Alliance later awarded Best Play Revival. His work is not limited to New York. He has taken productions to London, with credits in the West End, and to international festivals.
In the year ahead, James is preparing for the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He will be presenting The Marriage of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein, a play that has received critical acclaim. Alongside this, he is co-producing a national tour of Dungeons & Dragons: Twenty Sided Tavern in the United States. The show merges interactive theater with live gaming.

James doesn’t limit his contributions to the theater world. He’s also involved in volunteer and community work. He has given his time to the New York Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity. He regularly donates blood through the New York Blood Bank and supports organizations like the Legal Aid Society.
